On December 3, 1967, South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard achieved a medical milestone by performing the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant. He replaced the failing heart of Louis Washkansky with that of Denise Darvall. While Washkansky survived the surgery, he succumbed to pneumonia 18 days later due to weakened immunity.
