A Filipino domestic worker was duped out of her life savings by a sophisticated romance scam. The con artist, using AI-generated deepfakes, impersonated Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, convincing her through seemingly real video calls and constant messages. The scam unravelled when requests for money for a marriage certificate and a ‘royal membership’ raised suspicion, leading her to discover the scammer’s Nigerian origin.
