Kaoru Mitoma is not playing for Japan against the Netherlands because of a hamstring injury suffered while playing for Brighton in May. Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu hoped the winger could recover in time, but medical staff advised otherwise. As a result, Mitoma was left out of Japan’s World Cup squad, dealing a major setback to the team’s plans.
